What is Brookland?
Brookland Magisterial District, in western Henrico, reaches north from the West End of the City of Richmond, and includes the communities of Glen Allen, Laurel, Dumbarton, and Lakeside. It extends to Hanover County, with West Broad making its western boundary, Woodman Road bordering the east, and Staples Mill Road as its spine.
The community of Glen Allen is the largest in Brookland, and has been named by Money Magazine as #66 in its top 100 best places to live. Glen Allen is home to the headquarters of Hamilton Beach. Sites of interest in Brookland include Meadow Farm living history museum, the Cultural Arts Center, and Walkerton Tavern.
Brookland has seen a lot of history: the precinct of Coalpit gets its name from the coal mines in the area at Springfield and Deep Run. Horsepen Road was the location of a pen for horses during the Revolutionary War. Lafayette traveled on Mountain Road on his way to Yorktown. James Branch Cabell wrote one of his novels in a cabin on Staples Mill Pond. Libbie Avenue was named by Mark Thomas Thompson, publisher of the first horticultural paper published in the US, for his wife, Libbie Freeman Thompson. Echo Lake was an important recreation area for African-Americans during segregation.
Today, Brookland includes a mix of rural and suburban areas, as well as neighborhoods bordering the west end of Richmond. There are shopping centers, hotels, bed and breakfast inns, restaurants, libraries and parks, including a state of the art Little League baseball park. Brookland is known for its excellent schools—including Heritage High School, Heritage Technical Center, Glen Allen High School, with the Center for Education and Human Development, and George Moody Middle school, with an International Baccalaureate program.
