2018 Candidate Petition Signatures

What’s up with the campaign workers collecting signatures? Candidates for US Senate and Congressional seats must collect qualified voter signatures in order to get on the ballot. US Senate candidates are required to collect 10,000 signatures, with at least 400 from each congressional district. 4th and 7th Congressional District candidates must collect 1,000 signatures from voters in their respective districts. The deadline to file signatures is March 29, 2018. So, keep a lookout for those clipboards at events if you haven’t already signed petitions for Senator Tim Kaine and the Congressional candidate(s)for your district: 4th – Congressman Donald McEachin; 7th – Helen Alli, Abigail Spanberger, and Dan Ward. Magisterial District Meetings

For March, members will meet with their Magisterial District teams instead of our regular monthly meeting. This is a great opportunity to connect with Democrats in your area of Henrico. Local elected officials may even attend some of the meetings, schedules permitting.  Look for details on our website calendar and Facebook page, as well as in your email inbox.

1/27/18 Orientation/Strategy Session

Join us for our orientation/strategy session on Jan. 27, 10:00-2:00 at the DPVA headquarters, 919 E. Main Street, Richmond, VA 23219 (SunTrust Building). This session is open to new, returning and even prospective members interested in learning about what we do. The first half of the meeting will be a deep dive into the mission of the committee, how our local committee works with the state and national party, and an overview of the elections process in Virginia. For the second half, we will examine lessons from 2017. Then we will develop strategic goals and objectives for our committees to help elect even more Democrats to represent Henrico in 2018 and beyond.

Parking on street is free on Saturdays or you can park in the building garage. Buzz the security desk to be let in. From 10th Street, enter SunTrust Building through the far left doors. Take elevators to the 20th floor.

Officers of Election Needed

We are looking for people interested in serving as Democratic appointees to work as Officers of Election inside the polls on Election Day.  Officers of Election oversee the electoral process to ensure a fair and impartial election. Training is required and you must remain at the polling place to which you are assigned from 5:00 a.m. until votes are counted after polls close at 7:00 p.m. Pay ranges from $135 to $220 per election depending upon the position.  For more information, visit the Henrico Registrar’s website. 2017 Reflections

Taking a moment to reflect on this past year’s accomplishments as we begin 2018:

– We kicked off the year with Special Elections for two outstanding Democrats: State Senator Jennifer McClellan (9th) and Delegate Jeffrey Bourne (71st).

– With the help of our Communications Committee, Henrico Democrats launched a new and improved website.

– As campaign season got underway, our Outreach Committee organized enthusiastic volunteers and candidates who engaged with constituents at the Filipino Festival, McShin Recovery Fest, Virginia State Fair, and Glen Allen Day.

– Our Fundraising Committee planned a fantastic Henrico Blue Rally in October with soon to be Lieutenant Governor-elect Justin Fairfax among the special guests.

– Thanks to the generous support of members and other donors, Henrico Democrats mailed 25,000 Democratic sample ballots to voters and printed another 35,000 for distribution on Election Day.

– Our Precinct Organization Committee helped coordinate poll greeters to hand out those sample ballots to voters at the vast majority of Henrico’s 91 voting precincts.

– With Courtney Lynch’s victory, Democrats took control of the Henrico Board of Supervisors.

– We had incredible Democratic candidates running in every district in Henrico County. Dawn Adams, Lamont Bagby, Jeffrey Bourne, Delores McQuinn, Debra Rodman, and Schuyler Van Valkenburg will represent Henrico constituents well in the General Assembly. Although they came up a little short, Sheila Bynum-Coleman and Melissa Dart ran impressive, competitive races helping to ensure victories for the Democratic candidates at the top of the ticket.

2018 is shaping up to be another exciting year as Democrats in Henrico and across Virginia work together to defeat Republican Congressman Dave Brat (7th Dist) and re-elect Congressman Donald McEachin (4th Dist) and US Senator Tim Kaine. We thank all our supporters and Past Chair Cheryl Zando for her amazing leadership over the last 4 years.

1/8/18 – Meet 7th CD Candidates & Organize Magisterial District Leadership Teams

Join us for our next  monthly meeting on Monday, January 8th.  The four Democratic candidates for the 7th US Congressional District will be speaking: Helen Alli, Diane Fraser, Abigail Spanberger, and Dan Ward. Senator Tim Kaine and Congressman Donald McEachin, who are running for re-election in 2018, have also been invited. Additionally, we will be forming new magisterial district leadership teams and electing Chairs of each team (details belows).

At our Jan. 8 meeting, we will be forming Magisterial District Leadership Teams for each of the five districts in Henrico. Henrico Democrats members from each district will meet in separate caucuses to organize their leadership teams and elect Chairs.

Magisterial District Leadership Teams help strengthen Henrico Democrats and achieve election victories by motivating and engaging voters in their districts. Responsibilities include planning social gatherings to get to know fellow Democrats, publicizing campaign events such as fundraisers and volunteer opportunities, helping distribute campaign signs, and organizing volunteers to dress and work the polls on election days. Magisterial District Chairs and Co-Chairs are members of the Precinct Organization Committee and serve a two-year term. They must be a member of Henrico Democrats and reside within the magisterial district they represent: Brookland, Fairfield, Three Chopt, Tuckahoe, or Varina. Newly-elected Board of Supervisor Courtney Lynch will be making appointments to local and regional Boards and Commissions. Click here for a list. Leadership Team Elections 12/11/2017

Henrico Democrats will hold our December meeting immediately following the conclusion of our Reorganization Caucus on December 11th. At this meeting we will elect our officers for 2018-2019.

You must be a member in order to vote for the leadership committee. [See Reorganization article above.]

Nominations for leadership positions will be taken from the floor, including self-nominations. Members will be voting for all levels of the leadership team including:

Chair - duties include presiding over committee, overseeing the Candidate and Nominations committee, and overseeing the work of the other officers. This position is currently held by Cheryl Zando, who is not eligible for reelection due to term-limits.

1st Vice Chair - duties include overseeing the Finance Committee and Fundraising Committee, as well as presiding over meetings in the absence of the chair. This position is currently held by Marques Jones.

2nd Vice Chair - duties include overseeing the work of the Precinct Organization Committee and Outreach Committee, as well as presiding over meetings in the absence of the chair and 1st vice chair. This position is currently held by Cathy Woodson.

3rd Vice Chair - duties include overseeing the Communications Committee and Research, Data & Technology Committee, as well as presiding over meetings in the absence of the chair and other vice chairs. This position is currently held by Camilla Simon, with Madigan Cochran acting as a substitute.

Secretary - duties include recording the minutes of all proceedings, maintaining past minutes, and serving as historian. This position is currently held by Lissa Brown.

Treasurer - duties include conducting all business relating to the funds of the Committee and working with the Financial Committee to prepare the annual budget. This position is currently held by Bob Shippee.
