2012 J J Weekend

February 10 – 11, 2012

This was a huge weekend for HCDC and Henrico Democrats. On Saturday, the Democratic Party of Virginia’s 2012 Awards Luncheon was held. After an introduction by Chairman Brian Moran, we heard from Steve Walker, Deputy National Political Director for the DNC. Then, the HCDC sweep began…

It started with the Grassroots Volunteer Awards which honor outstanding volunteers in each of the 11 Congressional Districts. Most of the awards were presented by the respective CD chairs and we heard many examples of extraordinary service. HCDC’s own 2nd Vice Chair, Cheryl Zando, was the winner for the 7th district. She worked tirelessly on the successful campaign of Shannon Taylor for Henrico Commonwealth Attorney. She helped organize Meet and Greets, canvassing, and phone banking and certainly deserved this award. Congratulations Cheryl!*

The sweep continued when HCDC member Monica Wiley was presented the Tom Whipple Party Service Award. In the presentation Gaylene Kanoyton told of the professionalism Monica displayed when dealing with even the most difficult of those contacting DPVA. We are lucky to have her as part of our committee.

Then came the Committee of the Year Award. The Henrico County Democratic Committee was the winner of the Award for Category I (suburban). Among the things noted in the nomination letter for HCDC were the fact that the entire Democratic ticket in 2011 was victorious, our strong membership, and the very successful Signature Fundraiser, Bring Back the Blue which featured Governor Tim Kaine as the keynote speaker.

But HCDC was not finished. At the JJ Diner, Tyrone Nelson gave the invocation. Then Shannon Taylor had the honor of introducing Chairman Brian Moran. As Cheryl Zando noted: It’s good to be a Henrico Democrat!
